The hit crime show will be back.

With the end of Better Call Saul and The Walking Dead, AMC is struggling to remain relevant among the larger Peak TV networks, but the home of Breaking Bad and Mad Men still has some pretty respectable shows on the air. TWD spinoffs aside, AMC's biggest hit in recent years has undoubtedly been Dark Winds, a crime drama about two Native American cops, Joe Leaphorn and Jim Che, who investigate murders and robberies in Navajo country.

Ever since its first season premiered in 2022, fans and critics alike have been certain that the show, based on Tony Hillerman's iconic Leaphorn & Chee novel series, would become one of the biggest hits of its later run, and it looks like the producers agree, renewing Dark Winds for a third run after a stellar second season.

Big name producers

While the biggest reasons why fans started watching Dark Winds are the beloved status of the original books, great scripts, and compelling lead performances by Zahn McClarnon and Kiowa Gordon, it can't be denied that the big stars producing the show also helped some people make up their minds to check out the show.

Dark Winds is famously produced by none other than George R.R. Martin, who was a huge fan of the original book series and decided to pay respect to the late Hillerman's writing by helping to create the show. The series is also produced by Hollywood icon Robert Redford, making Dark Winds a must-see for fans of the veteran actor.

Season 3 will not premiere anytime soon

While the show has just been renewed for a third season, AMC executives were quick to point out that fans shouldn't expect to see Leaphorn and Chee again until at least 2025, as the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes leave producers and actors with no way to film the show in the coming months.

So Dark Winds' tight schedule was destroyed by the strikes, but with Netflix or Amazon Prime shows consistently arriving much later than expected, fans are willing to wait a little longer for a crime drama, especially considering how great the second season was.
