The actress recently confirmed everyone's guesses about her upcoming role.
Summary
- Beetlejuice Beetlejuice stars some of the original cast members as well as new actors like Jenna Ortega.
- The actress was speculated to play Lydia's daughter because of her likeness to Winona Ryder.
- Ortega says her character is quite different from her mother and the two have a strained relationship in the film.
Although there is no official trailer for Tim Burton's Beetlejuice sequel, the upcoming film is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated premieres of the year. Set for release in early September, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will take place nearly forty years after the events of the first movie, and tell the story of the fan-favorite devilish character as he attempts to return to our world.
In addition to Michael Keaton reprising his iconic role in the film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will see Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara reprise their roles as Lydia and Delia Deetz, respectively. Apart from the original cast, Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe will also appear in the new film. Since their characters will be completely new to the franchise, audiences are excited to learn who the actors will be playing in the sequel. Here's what Jenna Ortega recently said about her role.
Right to Guess
You probably know Jenna Ortega from another of Tim Burton's mysterious creations, Netflix's hit supernatural drama Wednesday, whose second season will begin filming in April. On the show, the actress has shown her ability to portray quirky and dark characters with a gothic vibe.
With that in mind, it's only natural that she'd star in the Burton's sequel to Beetlejuice. And considering her age and her ability to portray young weirdos, it is no surprise that Ortega plays Lydia Deetz's daughter Astrid in the upcoming film. It is even more obvious when you consider that Jenna bears a striking resemblance to Winona Ryder.
How Similar Are Astrid and Wednesday?
There may be a lot of similarities between Ryder's Lydia and Ortega's Wednesday. But it seems that Jenna's Beetlejuice character is nothing like her onscreen mother.
'She's weird, but in a different way and not in the way you'd assume,' Jenna Ortega described Astrid in a recent interview. 'I wouldn't say she's bright and sunny at all. She doesn't go to the opposite end of the spectrum [from her mother], but any kid who becomes a teenager wants to be removed from their parents. I think they instantly just fight whatever it is that their parent loves.'
Still, the Wednesday actress said that while her Beetlejuice character isn't all chipper and life-loving, she's not too fond of her mother's past. As a result, the two characters 'butt heads' a lot in the movie.
'The relationship between Lydia and Astrid, my character, is very important. And it's also really strange because it's a lot of catching up and putting the pieces together of what's gone on in Lydia's life since [the first film], which is nice, I think, for anybody who loves the character and is excited to see her again,' Ortega added.
We'll see what comes of this conflict on September 6, when Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hits theaters.
