Sheldon and Amy's Intimate Scene Was a Surprise to Everyone, Even the Actors Themselves
We all love The Big Bang Theory.
Of course, not everyone could sit through a 12-season sitcom. Still, there's no denying how good the storylines have been for the characters that we've become attached to.
One of the most memorable characters on the show was Sheldon Cooper, played by Jim Parsons. The story of an eccentric theoretical physicist with a fascination for pop culture was so beloved by fans that in 2017 the franchise spawned a prequel to the series, Young Sheldon, which continues to this day.
The moment of intimacy shared between Sheldon and Amy Fowler (Mayim Bialik) came as a surprise to many fans.
Their relationship has not been an easy one, with many believing that Sheldon's personality lies somewhere on a spectrum. However, the fact that Sheldon agreed to have intercourse with Amy became a big deal. Turns out, not only for the fans, but also for the actors themselves.
It all happened in "The Opening Night Excitement," episode 11 of season 9. The story focuses on two major events in Cooper's life: the new Star Wars movie and Amy's birthday.
But after consulting with the imaginary Professor Proton, dressed as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and (not-so-imaginary) Penny and Bernadette, the future Nobel laureate decided to choose time with Amy over the long-awaited cinema trip. And so came an important moment in Sheldon's life that defined his future values, preferences, and ultimately a new phase in his relationship with Amy.
At PaleyFest LA 2016, actors Mayim Bialik and Jim Parsons shared their thoughts on such an important event in their characters' lives.
“I typically don't read them [scripts] until the morning of the table reading, but this tape night, I happened to be leafing through the script,” Bialik said of her feelings reading the script.
Parsons continued the story, pointing out that Bialik approached him just as he was about to enter the performance scene. After the actress asked him if he had read the script, Parsons immediately replied in jest, "What, do we f----?" They certainly didn't expect what was to come!
And they didn't even know what fate awaited Sheldon and Amy in the seasons that followed! Nevertheless, it was a scene that well represented the spiritual (and emotional) growth of both the characters and the audience.
