After a year of silence, 3000 Pictures’ remake of the 1992 erotic thriller Single White Female is finally moving ahead, starring Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell, with a new title and writer now set.

After a year of quiet, the remake of 1992's cult-favorite thriller Single White Female just took a real step forward. New title, new writer, same unnerving roommate energy — and yes, Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell are still the leads.

The update

The film is now officially called Single Female. Sarah DeLappe, who wrote the sharp, mean-spirited A24 slasher comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies and earned serious acclaim for her play The Wolves (including the American Playwriting Foundation's first-ever Relentless Award), has signed on to write the script. Dropping the 'White' is a very 2026 move — cleaner title, broader canvas.

Who is doing what

  • Stars: Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell
  • Writer: Sarah DeLappe
  • Producers: Jenna Ortega, Taylor Russell, Stacey Sher, Marisa Paiva
  • Banner: 3000 Pictures
  • Status: No director yet, no release date set

What they are remaking

The original Single White Female was directed by Barbet Schroeder, adapted from John Lutz's 1990 novel SWF Seeks Same. It starred Bridget Fonda as Allison (aka Allie) Jones and Jennifer Jason Leigh as Hedra (aka Hedy) Carlson. The story tracks a newly single woman who takes in a roommate, sparks a fast friendship, and then watches it slide into fixation and identity theft, all while violence inches closer to home. If you know, you know — it is one of the defining '90s thrillers for a reason.

Where else you will see the leads

Ortega recently popped up in last year's A24 horror comedy Death of a Unicorn and turned heads again in Netflix's Wednesday Season 2. Next up, she stars opposite Glen Powell in J.J. Abrams' The Great Beyond, set to open on November 13.

Russell, fresh off Bones and All, is attached to the upcoming South Korean sci-fi thriller Hope alongside Alicia Vikander, Michael Fassbender, and Squid Game standout Jung Ho-yeon.

Bottom line: Single Female now has its voice on the page and its stars behind the camera as producers. Once a director signs on, expect this to move fast — the material practically directs itself, and the new title signals exactly the kind of modern refit this story invites.
