Zayn Drops Harsh Truth About One Direction Split: 'We Got Sick of Each Other'
Zayn finally explained his abrupt departure from One Direction.
In the first half of the last decade, no band in the world was bigger than One Direction. These five British kids took the world by storm with their sweet voices and handsome faces, their live performances filling entire stadiums. But the incredible popularity didn't last long, as the band broke up in 2016, with one of the key members, Zayn Malik, leaving a full year earlier in 2015.
The reason for the band's break-up was never talked about in detail until Zayn Malik finally decided to spill the beans on the matter.
When Zayn left One Direction in 2015, the official reason for his departure was that he wanted to take a break from being in a band because it was causing him a lot of stress. That bit was true, and it took him a full year before he released his debut studio album, Mind of Mine. Now, almost a decade later, Zayn has finally offered a more in-depth explanation for his abrupt departure from One Direction.
According to the singer, by the time he left, he could see the writing on the wall: all his bandmates were thinking of going solo, and so he decided to turn a page and move on before his world started crumbling all around him. Plus, the interpersonal dynamics within the band were wearing really thin after years of constantly touring together.
'I knew something was happening, so I just got ahead of the curve. I just seen it [coming] and I completely selfishly wanted to be the first person to go and make my own record. If I'm being completely honest with you, I was like, "I'm going to jump the gun here." There were obviously underlying issues within our friendships, too. We'd got sick of each other if I'm being completely honest,' Zayn said.
So, in the end, Zayn just decided to beat Styles and the others to it. The band had run its course, and all the members were thinking about what they were going to do next, it's just that inertia was keeping them in the rut, and Zayn just went and stepped out of it first. So far, Styles has been more successful as a solo performer, but it isn't over yet.
