Aside from the Winchesters, there appear to be at least two other Supernatural characters who can offer exciting storylines and amazing dynamics.

After being cancelled by the CW and failing to find a new home network, The Winchesters seems to be officially dead, despite a strong #SaveTheWinchesters campaign launched by Jensen Ackles and supported by the massive Supernatural fandom.

The prequel series about Dean and Sam Winchester's parents only lasted one season, and for many core fans, its cancellation made perfect sense.

Although Supernatural fans are sad to say goodbye to the beloved universe once again, many of them don't blame the network and can see why the spinoff didn't work out. First, it took a good portion of the show's thirteen episodes to get used to the new faces of John and Mary Winchester, this time played by Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly. But just as viewers were getting used to the new actors, the Season 1 finale hit them with a revelation that completely ruined the series.

It turned out that Mary and John are not the same people as the Winchesters in the parent show because the prequel universe is not the same one we saw on Supernatural. It is an alternate one, and here Mary and John, as well as their sons, have a chance to choose their own destiny and change the events of the original series. While it gave Dean, who appeared in the finale, a more satisfying ending, this premise stripped the prequel of any meaning within the Supernatural canon and ultimately doomed it. Seriously, who asked for an alternate timeline with alternate Mary and John hunting in their 20s?

That doesn't mean, however, that the Supernatural franchise has to die too. There is still a chance for a good show set in the fan-favourite canonical universe. A buddy horror about the journey of the younger Bobby Singer and Rufus Turner might do the trick.

A show about these two characters is needed because the creators have a story to tell, and the fans want to hear it. The only real option for a future Supernatural spinoff is a prequel with characters the fan base cares about. Clearly, nobody seems to care about the alternate Winchesters, but the canonical Bobby and Rufus just might do the trick by offering potentially fun and exciting stories with plenty of the same quirks and idiosyncrasies as the original show but without too much baggage.

We never got to know the younger versions of Rufus and Bobby on Supernatural. So there are no preconceived notions of what sort of people they were supposed to have been when they were younger. That will allow the writers to cast young actors and then slowly develop the characters into the bickering, quirky Rufus and Bobby fans know and love from the original show. And that could be just the kind of bromance horror show the Supernatural universe and fandom need.
