The hit show is coming back.

When Netflix disclosed its intentions to transform Neil Gaiman's renowned comic book series into a live-action television show, original fans were somewhat apprehensive. The Sandman was largely deemed utterly unadaptable. However, Gaiman himself penned the script, and the first season was a resounding success. Viewers took to social media to profess their love for the show and urge Netflix to greenlight a second season.

The streaming behemoth took a full two months to announce that The Sandman would be making a comeback with additional episodes. Yet, even this long-anticipated renewal confirmation failed to satisfy the fandom. Netflix executives did not explicitly state that the show would be granted a second season, merely indicating that more episodes would be released soon.

Botched Shoot

It was evident that The Sandman would return, and Netflix even unveiled the production timeline. The initial phase of filming was scheduled from June 2023 to October 2023, followed by the second phase from January 2024 to April 2024.

Filming commenced as scheduled in June and proceeded for two weeks before production was abruptly halted. Despite most of the show's actors being British, Netflix was compelled to suspend production because Gainman is a vocal advocate of the WGA strike.

Without the presence of the showrunner and head writer, it was unfeasible to continue production despite the scripts having been completed in 2022. The fact is that major productions like The Sandman often require significant rewriting during filming. With Gaiman unable to contribute, the show had no choice but to pause production.

Therefore, it's entirely possible that The Sandman will not return to the big screen in 2024, given the substantial amount of filming still required. New episodes will most likely debut on Netflix in 2025, but only if the WGA strike concludes soon. If the strike continues for the remainder of the year, fans may have to wait until 2026 to see The Sandman again.
