When Calls The Heart Fans Asking for Just One Thing in Season 11
Fans are optimistic that the upcoming season could still deliver.
For a decade since its premiere in 2014, Hallmark's When Calls the Heart has often been hailed as the finest melodrama on the air, with fans enjoying the journey of Elizabeth, a young woman from high society who relocates to the Canadian frontier to teach at a local school. However, it appears that the recently concluded tenth season disappointed viewers for the first time in the show's history, as a particular plot twist led to accusations of careless writing from the fandom.
We are referring, of course, to the unexpected breakup of Elizabeth and Lucas. Their relationship had been blossoming for three full seasons, and fans were looking forward to seeing them exchange vows. Unfortunately, it turned out that Elizabeth was not ready to commit to Lucas, choosing instead to pursue a romance with Mountie Nathan.
Just One Wish
Unsurprisingly, fans were upset by how quickly Elizabeth moved on from her long-term relationship with Lucas and questioned the writers' decision to break up the two. Although some fans threatened to abandon the show if Elizabeth and Lucas didn't reconcile in the upcoming Season 11, others were less rigid, simply pointing out that it would be great if the show's writing were a bit more consistent.
Even if the upcoming season features Elizabeth and Nathan as a romantic duo, the show could still reclaim its title as the best melodrama on air if the writers try and make each character's arc logical and compelling rather than attempting to shock the fans with ill-conceived plot twists as they did earlier this month.
Many fans are already convinced that Elizabeth's character has been compromised beyond repair following her abrupt decision to end things with Lucas, as it essentially shattered the long-developed character arc she was following. The writers will face a huge challenge in making fans fall in love with her character again. But it would appear there is no other way forward for When Calls the Heart than by bringing consistency into Elizabeth's character arc.
