What Was the Point of Zava? Ted Lasso Fans Still Not Over Him Hogging All That Screen Time
The biggest attraction of Season 3 seems to have turned out to be a huge flop.
The third season of everyone's favourite feel-good show became a bit of a disappointment for fans, who lamented the length of the episodes and the abundance of forgettable throwaway storylines, arguing that the latest season came across as far more stale and tired than the first two.
However, fans still held out hope that not all was lost for the third season when AFC Richmond acquired Zava, one of the best football players in the world.
Fans and characters alike were confident that Zava would single-handedly bring the team the much-coveted title, as his resume was full of impressive goals and insane plays, but all those hopes were dashed to smithereens when Zava just up and left Richmond after playing just a few games for the team and failing to do anything of significance. Fans couldn't help but wonder why this character was introduced to the show in the first place.
‘He came in and consumed so much of a few episodes and was gone. The team was already in a not great position, so not sure how the whiplash of his presence has done anything more than make things seem more dire in the aftermath,’ a fan observed.
Some viewers, however, disagree, noting that Zava's failure played an important role in Ted Lasso's strategy as a coach, as he finally realised that superstar players were not the way forward and that only by relying on his core players could Richmond truly shine on the field.
‘Zava was a false hope that led to Ted's realisation of Total Football. Zava shows that you can't just rely on a superstar to save the team, the whole team needs to save the team, together,’ another fan argued.
So, it feels like Zava's brief presence on the show was just the right tool to help Ted grow as a coach because, had it not been for him, Ted would never have come to the conclusions he eventually drew. And even though Zava was only in a couple of episodes, he certainly made a lot of the scenes feel more alive and vibrant.
Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 11 will arrive on Apple TV +, without Zava, on 24 May 2023.
