The upcoming movie will have a "handmade" feel unlike other modern productions.

Summary

  • The second installment of Beetlejuice is coming to the big screen nearly four decades after the original film was released.
  • The horror comedy's star Michael Keaton and director Tim Burton had been thinking about making a sequel for years before finally getting around to it.
  • They agreed that the new movie needed to feel as real as possible, so they imposed certain restrictions.

Fortunately, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have been over for months now, and the second installment of Tim Burton's 1988 cult classic Beetlejuice has been in the works all this time for a fall premiere. Given the thirty-six years of fan anticipation for the sequel, it's obvious that it will be a success.

But there may be another reason. Part 2 of the horror comedy, starring Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin, Catherine O'Hara and Wynona Ryder, will be unlike most other modern films.

A Long Journey to Fruition

Beetlejuice wasn't Michael Keaton's first big role, as the actor had already been in the industry for over a decade and had appeared in many films and TV shows, but the horror comedy was destined to become one of his most memorable performances. And even the fact that Keaton has gone on to play Batman in at least three post-Beetlejuice films, as well as making a foray into the MCU as Vulture, cannot change that.

According to the actor, he has harbored a desire to revisit his iconic character for years. In addition, Keaton revealed in a recent interview that he and Tim Burton considered making a Beetlejuice sequel on numerous occasions. However, they didn't want to simply cash in on the success of the original - the sequel had to be done right, or not done at all.

Obviously, Keaton and Burton came up with a worthy idea. And there's one thing about their upcoming film that will set it apart from most modern productions.

A Cap on CGI

In the interview, Michael Keaton said that there was one thing that he and Tim Burton were very particular about from the beginning. The use of CGI had to be severely limited to prevent Beetlejuice Beetlejuice from becoming a typical modern green-screen production.

'The one thing that he and I decided on early, early, early on from the beginning, if we ever did it again, I was totally not interested in doing something where there was too much technology. It had to feel handmade,' the actor said.

Keaton wanted to have interactions with real people, to feel props and sets, so that the feelings of his and other actors' characters would be real on screen.

'It's the most exciting thing, when you get to do that again after years of standing in front of a giant screen, pretending somebody's across the way from you, this is just enormous fun,' he added.

And while it remains to be seen if Keaton and Burton's decision to limit CGI in the sequel will pay off, something tells us the movie will be exciting to watch. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is scheduled for release on September 6. Catherine O'Hara and Winona Ryder reprise their roles in the movie, with Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci and Willem Dafoe joining the cast.
