The CW is ready for its next chapter.

When Nexstar acquired the CW, and the new management began canceling shows indiscriminately, fans of the iconic network feared its golden days were officially over. Over the past year, executives have concentrated more on acquiring foreign shows, hosting sporting events, and investing in live shows rather than producing new scripted projects, which only exacerbated fans' concerns.

However, it looks like the new management is still trying to up their scripted shows game by announcing a new live-action series titled Wild Cards. Although this new series is still more than a year away from debuting on the network, fans are already certain that it won't be the new sensation The CW is marketing it to be.

Lots of Familiar Faces

As is customary with The CW, the new show will feature a multitude of familiar actors, particularly for fans of the network's previous shows. The series about a gifted detective who gets demoted to the marine unit and partners up with a con artist to solve crimes will star Vanessa Morgan from Riverdale and Giacomo Gianniotti, best known for his role as Lord Julien in Reign.

It looks like The CW is gravitating towards crime and mystery when it comes to scripted shows now. It has to be said, though, that given the cast's pedigree and the compelling premise, Wild Cards stands a very good chance of becoming a reasonably well-received outing for the channel.

No Return to Former Glory

While there is a lot of promise in the news that The CW is commissioning a new scripted show, Wild Cards can hardly change the fledgling network’s fortunes on its own.

Given its niche appeal, the series doesn't seem to have what it takes to become the next Riverdale or Supernatural, even with big-ticket actors attached to it. Pundits are predicting that, at best, it will be a minor hit with a dedicated but very small fanbase, meaning that it won’t turn The CW back into the giant of network television it was a decade ago.

Whatever the case may be, fans will certainly be happy to see Vanessa Morgan take on a new role, seeing how her portrayal of Toni in Riverdale made her a real darling with viewers.
