We've Already Seen Aidan's AJLT Ex – 20 Years Ago In a SATC Episode
The actress is back in a different role.
Although And Just Like That… is clearly not a great show, especially in comparison to the original Sex and the City, the writers are obviously trying to please both new and longtime fans of Carrie and company — and are actually succeeding in some ways.
People love seeing characters from the original series return for the revival, and even minor characters like Carrie's former boss Enid are welcome on AJLT. So when it was announced that John Corbett's Aidan Shaw would be coming back into Carrie's life, many old-time fans were excited, noting that the two characters looked great together almost 20 years ago.
The much anticipated comeback finally happened in Episode 7 of AJLT Season 2, proving that the chemistry between Carrie and her ex is still very much alive. However, viewers were shocked to learn just how much Aidan's life has changed since he and Carrie split, as it was revealed that Corbett's character had actually been married for quite some time.
In the tenth episode of Season 2, we were introduced to Kathy, Aidan's ex-wife, played by Rosemarie DeWitt. Although the character was never even mentioned in Sex and the City, some fans thought DeWitt looked familiar and struggled to understand where they had seen her in the past.
Thanks to IMDb, it wasn't hard to find out that DeWitt actually starred in the original SATC, and not in the role of Kathy.
In the Season 6 episode 'Hop, Skip and a Week,' Rosemarie DeWitt played a character named Fern, Miranda's co-worker at the law firm. She was the one who called out Miranda for constantly being late for her appointments, serving up her complaints with a repulsive, passive-aggressive smile.
Even though Fern was only featured in one scene, some fans hated her so much that DeWitt's face was forever etched in their minds.
Luckily, the actress plays a completely different character in the spin-off. Kathy turned out to be a rather pleasant person, so people were quite happy to see DeWitt in the company of Parker and other cast members.
Still, it's surprising that the producers decided to cast an actress who had already portrayed a character in the parent series. Were they trying to make the audience subconsciously hate Kathy, justifying her and Aidan's relationship failure? Perhaps, but then why introduce DeWitt as a new character instead of building on Fern's obnoxious personality from SATC?
