WCTH Season 10 Left Fans Furious with Elizabeth Character Changes
The fans hated the new season.
While Hallmark's When Calls the Heart has been renowned as one of the best melodramas on the air since its debut in 2014, the tide seems to have turned for the period drama with the latest season. Fans have been piling scorns on the most recent developments in the narrative, especially following the controversial plot twist that shocked the entire fandom last week.
To put it into context, fans were looking forward to Elizabeth and Lucas's wedding for nearly three seasons. The season 10 finale seemed ideal for the couple to finally exchange vows. However, that never happened for the most contrived and implausible of reasons.
Sudden Change
In the episodes leading up to the season 10 finale, it was abruptly disclosed that Lucas had chosen to run for governor to protect Hope Valley from evil developers. Naturally, fans assumed that Elizabeth, professing her love for Lucas, would stand by his side and move to Capitol City with him if he got elected.
Yet, in a bewildering twist, Elizabeth chose to sever ties with Lucas, opting to stay in Hope Valley instead of relocating to the capital. This dramatic shift left many fans puzzled as the narrative from the past three seasons appeared to have been flushed down the toilet. Many questioned the writers' decision to morph a previously resilient and independent character into someone seemingly self-absorbed and indecisive.
Ruined Character
Early in the show, Elizabeth was portrayed as a courageous individual who left her comfort zone to move to the Canadian frontier to work as a teacher. Yet, a decade later, she appears hesitant to move to another city to support the man she claims to love. It's no surprise that fans found this inconsistency jarring, with many vowing not to watch the upcoming Season 11.
To add insult to injury, the writers have immediately started pairing up Elizabeth with Nathan, even though she's just barely separated from Lucas, leading to even more fan frustration with the show. Many feel that both Nathan and Lucas deserve much better than the seemingly fickle and self-centered woman that Elizabeth has now been turned into.
