Negan puts his unhinged saviour persona on display once again.

The original Walking Dead has officially concluded, but AMC has already found an ideal replacement for its hit zombie show. The spin-off, Dead City, is already getting rave reviews and sky-high ratings after just two episodes have been released in the first season. The prospect of watching a reformed Negan and Maggie, whose husband Glenn Negan brutally murdered with a baseball bat while Maggie was watching years ago, has attracted millions to their journey into zombie-infested New York. It has now become painfully evident that Negan still has his evil demons inside him even after supposedly leaving that dark chapter of his life behind.

In the recently released Episode 2, Negan, Maggie, and the community they find themselves in are ambushed by the marauders led by the show's main antagonist, Croat. This new gang wear motorcycle helmets and call themselves The Burazi.

After they kill Esther, one of the newly introduced characters in the show, Negan reverts to his old saviour self. After the man that killed Esther is captured, Negan puts on a brutal performance for the remaining Burazi, telling them in his trademark maniacal cadence that they should have brought umbrellas because it's about to rain and then slitting the man's throat and gutting him to shower his comrades in his blood and intestines.

The scene is a loud-and-clear demonstration that the old Negan isn't gone; he's just lurking behind the new reformed persona. Maggie seems very much concerned after witnessing the gory show Negan puts on for the Butazi: she may very well have experienced a flashback to that tragic night many years ago when Negan bashed her husband Glenn's head in and left her child fatherless. Even though the two are now on the same side, some things are unforgettable and unforgivable.

Dead City showrunner Eli Jorné seems sure that Maggie will finally stop trying to find an explanation for why Negan murdered her husband during the course of this spin-off.

'The showrunner basically says that Maggie looks at Negan as if she's thinking "maybe there is no justification for what he did to Glenn, maybe he is just the murderer of my husband, and that's all there is to say about it",' a fan noted.

Walking Dead: Dead City Season 1 Episode 3 People Are a Resource will arrive on AMC 2 July 2023.
