There's No Point in Season 3 After That Divisive OFMD Finale
The writers left no reason for the show to be renewed.
Summary
- Season 2 ended with a happy ending for Blackbeard and Stede, leaving fans wondering where the show would go from here.
- Another popular supporting character was killed off, leaving fans confused about the show's potential third season.
In the space of two years, Max's Our Flag Means Death has become one of the most popular and well-loved comedies on television, and the recently concluded second season has only cemented that notion. The production team behind the show managed to make the second outing for the diverse crew of pirates feel more complex and massive without sacrificing an ounce of the show's charm and feel-good vibes.
However, the stellar Season 2 ended on a rather divisive note, leaving fans unsure if Season 3 will ever become a reality. While Max's executives will be more than happy with the show's ratings, a third season seems a bit redundant from a logical point of view. Here's why.
Happy ending
The main storyline of Season 2 revolved around the question of whether Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet would be together, as two lovers struggled to find forgiveness for each other after Blackbeard's betrayal in Season 1.
Of course, they got back together by the end of the series, but fans weren't expecting to see Blackbeard and Stede open an inn together and say goodbye to their pirate careers.
With the happy ending of two main characters choosing to live peacefully with each other instead of sailing the seven seas, there's simply no reason for the third season to become a reality, because without Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby, the show will lose its relevance. But that's not all.
Killing off a beloved character
While Blackbeard and Stede were OFMD's most popular characters from the very first episode, another character was often cited as one of the fandom's most beloved - Izzy Hands.
And although he became much more divisive in Season 2, we still loved Izzy and sided with him even when he was clearly in the wrong. So the writers' controversial decision to kill him off in the Season 2 finale almost feels like David Jenkins has just ruined his show.
With two of the main characters out of the picture and a much-loved supporting character killed off, Our Flag Means Death doesn't really need a second season, don't you think?
