Fans agree that if Diana Gabaldon writes a certain finale to the beloved story, it will cause a real riot.

Starz's Outlander has been a hugely popular show since it premiered in 2014, and it's pretty easy to see why — the historical drama series boasts a compelling time-traveling plot, great visuals, and a well-written and chemistry-filled central relationship between Claire and Jaime.

However, the last few seasons have been a bit rocky, with viewers often lambasting Starz for straying from Diana Gabaldon's original books and failing to translate the author's style to the screen in a meaningful way.

In part as a joke and in part to prepare themselves for a poorly handled ending, fans recently started a discussion about the worst possible finale for Claire and Jamie's story.

On Reddit, fans argued about different finales for the time-traveling saga, trying to determine which would be the worst. While most of the suggested endings were pretty horrifying, to say the least, one idea quickly emerged as the winner: Gabaldon could end her books by revealing that everything Claire experienced during the story was just her deathbed fever dream.

The parallels to The Lost's infamous ending are not coincidental, as people still remember how this finale completely ruined the entire series, despite its huge popularity and iconic status.

Fans fear an ending like that because it would undermine Claire's story, making the series' every single frame completely disposable.

While the idea of a dream ending is certainly clever and postmodern, viewers hope that Gabaldon will not fall for it, as it would destroy her legacy in the eyes of millions of fans. Some people were in fact so frightened by this finale idea, they confessed that they'd rather not have any ending at all than see something like this.

All in all, fans hope that the enormous pressure on Gabaldon's shoulders won't lead to a rushed ending to the beloved saga, and most viewers are willing to give the esteemed author and the show's creative team as much time as they need to develop a fitting ending for Claire and Jamie.
