If you were watching House M.D. around Season 7 and suddenly found yourself asking, "Wait... where the hell did Thirteen go?" — you weren't alone.

Olivia Wilde's character, Dr. Remy "Thirteen" Hadley, had been one of the standout additions to House's ever-rotating team of miserable geniuses. She was smart, mysterious, morally complicated, and one of the few people House seemed to respect. So when she suddenly vanished mid-season and was gone for good before Season 8 even began, fans were confused.

The Real Reason? Cowboys & Aliens.

Wilde left the show to star in Jon Favreau's 2011 sci-fi western Cowboys & Aliens alongside Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. It was one of those buzzy high-concept blockbusters that sounded like a guaranteed hit at the time. When the offer came through, she took it — and House gave her a "leave of absence" to go film.

Behind the scenes, everyone was reportedly supportive. The timing even worked for the show's plot: Thirteen was dealing with her Huntington's diagnosis, so her departure could be folded into the storyline. She returned briefly in the finale to tie things up, but that was it — no dramatic exit, no tragic death, just… gone.

Did It Work Out?

Depends who you ask. Cowboys & Aliens was a commercial shrug and a critical meh — it made money, but no one's putting it on their all-time list. That said, the move gave Wilde more visibility in Hollywood and helped nudge her toward bigger roles.

More importantly, it paved the way for her directorial work. A few years later, she made her debut behind the camera with Booksmart (critically adored), followed by Don't Worry Darling (critically... debated). Either way, she proved she was more than just a TV star with cool cheekbones and a tragic character arc.

So while fans of House might still miss Thirteen, Olivia Wilde got what she needed from the exit: a shot at the big screen — and eventually, the director's chair. Not a bad trade.
