The Voice Season 23 Battles Results: Who Got to Stay and Who Got Booted?
The first part of the Battle Rounds ended with some big wins and huge letdowns.
After a long and fruitful blind audition process, The Voice has finally entered its battles, where two contestants, paired by a coach, perform a song together in the hopes that their coach will pick them. Blake Shelton, Niall Horan, Chance the Rapper, and Kelly Clarkson were all able to recruit some pretty strong teams, so fans were eager to see the first part of the Battle Rounds.
But now that it's finally out, people are a little worried about the future of season 23.
First up was Team Kelly, who had two sets of singers for this episode.
The first pair to take the stage was ALI and D. Smooth, and the two soul singers with big hearts were tasked with performing Allen Stone's "Unaware." ALI won the battle, but D. Smooth got a playoff pass from Kelly after Chance tried to steal him for his team.
The next two singers from Kelly's team were Holly Brand and Katie Beth, who performed Ingrid Andress' "Lady Like," and after some deliberation, Holly was chosen as the winner of this battle.
Team Niall also presented the fans with two battles this episode, with two sets of singers, Kate Cosentino and Tiana Goss performing Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and Michael B. and Ryley Tate Wilson performing Giveon's "Heartbreak Anniversary."
Surprisingly, none of the singers went home — although Kate and Michael won their battles, Tiana was stolen by Chance, and Ryley earned herself a playoff pass.
Team Blake's showdown between Carlos Rising and Grace West ended with Grace winning the battle, as Blake declared her already ready to perform in Nashville.
Team Chance's battle between Chloe Abbott and NariYella ended with the latter winning.
Although all of the battles were quite strong vocally, fans were very upset with the way the judges approached their duties and argued that the newly introduced playoff pass completely ruins the show. People thought it was really heartbreaking to see ALI celebrating his win only to be immediately crushed by his rival D. Smooth, who earned himself a ticket to the playoffs.
It's also strange that a loser of a battle will skip the whole round and go straight to the playoffs, which means they'll miss an important part of their training and present themselves the same way they did in the very first part of the battles.
It looks like the upcoming playoffs could be a big disappointment.
