The Surprising Reason Lisa Kudrow Avoids Watching Friends With Her Husband
Lisa Kudrow is finally rewatching Friends — just not when her husband’s around. In a recent talk show appearance, the Phoebe Buffay star admitted she’s embarrassed to watch the 90s hit in front of him and teased the personal reason why.
Lisa Kudrow is finally doing what a lot of us do at 1 a.m.: binging Friends. The twist is she had never actually watched the whole thing before, and she kind of hides it at home. Peak relatable, minus the syndicated checks.
Yes, she is watching Friends right now
On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the Emmy winner said she does not mind still being called Phoebe. In fact, she is in the middle of a full-series watch for the first time.
"I'm watching it now," she said. "I'm on Season 8 or 9. When did Rachel give birth? I don't know. I wait until my husband goes to sleep, because I'm too embarrassed."
Why she hides it from her husband
Asked why she sneaks the rewatch after Michael Stern turns in, Kudrow kept it simple:
"That I'm watching myself on TV every night!"
She stressed this is not a vanity project. She likes a comfort sitcom before bed and ran out of other options, so Friends stepped in as the nightcap.
Rediscovering the show like a fan
Kudrow says the episodes feel new because she never watched the whole run and barely remembers big chunks. Now, it almost plays like someone else’s life. Her words:
"It does now. And everyone's hilarious, and I'm laughing out loud."
Case in point: she hit the Alec Baldwin guest spot and remembered he was there, but not much else. The episode drops everyone at the Gellers' anniversary party, where Joey and Phoebe trade notes on the buffet. Joey complains he waited forever only to slip on a giant booger; the gag is that Phoebe had tossed an oyster on the floor. Kudrow said she laughed so hard she cried, then immediately texted Matt LeBlanc.
The legacy, still very loud
At 62, with The Comeback and that Emmy on the shelf, Kudrow watching Friends like a civilian is oddly perfect. She and Kimmel both pointed out the obvious: the show remains a classic, arguably even bigger now than when it first aired. Which explains why Phoebe Buffay still follows her around — and why she is finally letting the reruns follow her to bed, once her husband is asleep.
