The Real Reason Your Favourite Character Left Grey's Anatomy
Fans can now be sure their beloved actress left the show of her own accord.
Audiences have been following the hit medical drama created by Shonda Rhimes for nearly two decades. While the show continues to enjoy immense popularity even after all these years, most fans agree, it was the first ten seasons that were the golden age of Grey's Anatomy.
Viewers adored and connected with the original characters far more than the newer additions.
The departure of each original actor from Grey's Anatomy was a major blow for fans, but none elicited as much sadness and heartbreak as Sandra Oh's exit in Season 10 when she refused to continue portraying Cristina Yang. Here's why.
While some other actors have left the shows that made them famous due to behind-the-scenes problems and strained relationships with their co-stars, it wasn't the case for Sandra, who chose to leave the show entirely on her own. While the specific reason for her departure has not been made public, various sources and the actress herself noted that she was simply done with the character and decided to pursue other career opportunities.
And that's understandable, as many fans have noted that Cristina's storyline was one of the most refined and complete on Grey's Anatomy, as the character perfectly evolved from an insecure intern to an accomplished doctor who has seen and been through a lot. And Sandra put her heart and soul into the performance, earning a Golden Globe for the role and a staggering five Emmy nominations. But it looks like, despite the fame and critical acclaim, Sandra got tired of playing the same character for almost a decade, which led to her exit.
While fans lamented their favourite actress leaving the show at a relatively early stage, Sandra proved her decision was the right one, earning another Golden Globe for Killing Eve and making Time's 100 Most Influential People in the World list in 2019, cementing her reputation as one of the greatest television actresses out there who is not only talented but willing to take risks.
ABC will air the Grey's Anatomy next episode on May 11, 2023, at 9 p.m. ET.
