The Only Character Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Didn't Screw Over

For two seasons in a row, Netflix's Sweet Magnolias cemented itself as one of the most exciting, grounded, and compelling melodramas in the streaming giant's library, delighting viewers with great writing and heartfelt performances from its lead trio of actresses.

The story of three longtime friends juggling careers and families appealed to millions of people around the world, so fans naturally expected Season 3 to be even better than the first two installments.

Sadly, that didn't happen at all, as the third season proved to be a massive disappointment to fans and critics alike, who accused the writers of ruining a perfectly good series. Instead of deepening the relationships between the characters, the creative team decided to destroy them with unnecessary drama and shallow plot twists, all for the sole purpose of making the show feel more exciting.

Viewers hated it, complaining that most of the characters were changed for the worse, reduced from compelling personalities to pastiches of famous soap opera archetypes. Fortunately, at least one character managed to retain his integrity in the disastrous third season.

Although Ty's best friend is only a supporting character, people have always loved Al-Jaleel Knox's Gabe Weatherspoon for his upbeat attitude and great qualities as a friend, so seeing him not change a bit in the third season really cheered fans up. As in the earlier installments, Gabe is supportive and caring to Ty, giving him a place to breathe and helping him in any way he can.

'I found it commendable when he wouldn't get mad at Ty for [needing] time away. He was so supportive and just a great vibe all around. Wish we'd see more of him,' a fan said on Reddit.

Since Gabe was the only saving grace of the last season, fans began to demand more screen time for him in the possible fourth installment. Some even say that, without him, Sweet Magnolias is beyond saving.

'Gabe is the kind of friend I think everyone should have in their life, he's such a good friend, helps his friend when needed, motivates you, supports you. A great character indeed,' one fan noted, and we can't help but agree.
