It looks like the series finale is going to shock everyone.

Sam Levinson and The Weeknd's The Idol has already become one of the most popular shows of the year, and for no good reason.

Viewers were horrified to see how much nudity and violence the creators added to their project, while apparently not caring much about the series' narrative.

The story of sleazy cult leader Tedros (The Weeknd) corrupting innocent pop star Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) looked great on paper, but in the series itself, it turned out to be rather shallow and exploitative. And now, if one fan theory proves to be correct, it looks like the creators are going to upset The Idol viewers even more.

While it was clear from the start that Tedros is trying to corrupt Jocelyn and make her his personal sex slave, some fans suspect that the endgame for Jocelyn may be quite different. According to the fan theory, the very first scene of the show — in which Jocelyn fakes many complex emotions during a photo shoot — might be a key to understanding Depp's character.

The Idol creator himself actually pointed fans in that direction a while back.

'Levinson said the opening scene was important in the Inside the Episode video after the premiere, he said that he believed the audience would underestimate Jocelyn when in reality she could act and fake things very well,' one fan noted.

If that is true, the shocking Episode 3 scene in which Tedros beats Jocelyn with a hairbrush to remind her of how her own mother used to beat her may have a different meaning. Fans have found some evidence that Jocelyn may be the real abuser, not her mother.

'Unpopular theory: Jocelyn was actually the one who repeatedly abused her mother. Xander alluded to it and her ex said she used to care for her mother and wash her. Jocelyn just might be the real villain,' another fan said.

Portraying the young woman as the series' ultimate villain might be an interesting narrative choice, but many viewers still find it highly controversial. If it doesn't save the whole story, it may actually get The Idol creators in even bigger trouble after the finale airs.

The Idol Episode 5 will arrive on HBO on July 2, and the final Episode 6 will air on July 9, 2023.
