Is this the year Homelander earns his first Emmy?

With less than two months until voting begins, Emmy predictions are in full swing. There's been a lot of good television in the past year - including HBO's The Last of Us and Succession, Apple TV+'s Ted Lasso, and Netflix's Better Call Saul.

But critics and fans alike are calling for the first nomination of Antony Starr, who stars as Homelander in the gritty superhero show The Boys.

In 2022's Season 3, Homelander has reached a whole new level of unhinged. He's always been a threat to humanity - the darkest version of Superman. But now, as Billy Butcher, Hughie Campbell, and Starlight begin to make waves in their battle against the demented Supe, Homelander is no longer afraid to throw punches.

The season ended with him blasting a civilian with his laser vision, resulting in thunderous applause from his loyal followers. He's realized that he can do literally anything and still be treated like a god. And for the Boys, that's their worst nightmare.

Antony Starr has never won an Emmy for any of his work - The Boys, American Gothic, Banshee, etc. That may change when the official nominations are announced in July.

Starr's performance has been praised throughout the run of the series, being able to switch from a coldhearted murderer to the epitome of American perfection to a psychotic man-child on a dime.

The way his face flickered in the finale after laser-blasting a civilian represents every nuance in his character. You can see the anger at the man who'd been heckling seconds before, soon replaced by the 'I just messed up' fear in his eyes, ultimately ending with the cocky and heroic smile as he bathes in cheers.

Some critics are saying that Season 3 was his best performance to date, one that should warrant an Emmy nomination.

IGN's Matt Donato praised Starr's 'glazed-over presence' when fans see Homelander frightened for the first time, saying that he 'continues his rampage towards what should be an Emmy nomination.

For some critics, Starr's nomination is a long time coming. Emma Fraser (Daily Beast) has long been saying he deserves it. She called Season 3 'unequivocally' one of last year's best television performances and said, 'Let's give the actor the accolades he deserves.'

While Starr's performance was undoubtedly great, many early predictions have him outside of the top six candidates. This year was flooded with beloved stars like Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us), seasoned film vets like Jeff Bridges (The Old Man) and Harrison Ford (1923), and long-running characters like Bob Odenkirk's Saul Goodman (Better Call Saul).

Voting for Emmy nominations will take place from June 15 to June 26. The official nominees will be released to the public on July 12. The ceremony will take place on September 18 on Fox.
