The hit show demonstrates once again that its writers are well-versed in football, not just comedy.

Apple TV+'s series about an American coach training a British association football team became a perfect feel-good distraction in 2020, helping fans navigate the challenging pandemic year. While the show is often lauded for its hilarious humour and thoughtful character development, Ted Lasso primarily revolves around association football.

Fans of the sport have always appreciated the writers' in-depth knowledge of the game, so each episode is filled with football Easter eggs and references that only true association football fans may notice and appreciate.

Here are three football Easter eggs from Season 3, Episode 8:

Hey Jude

Although the famous Beatles track is a beautiful piece of music that deserves inclusion in any show, its appearance in this episode holds special meaning for football fans. Brentford Football Club fans sing this Paul McCartney tune before every game, and since Richmond defeated Brentford in last season's finale, the song was intentionally included in the episode.

The Breakfast Club Adventures by Marcus Rashford

While some fans might think Ted's choice to read to Henry is insignificant, this children's book was authored by Marcus Rashford, who plays for Manchester United and the England national team. Not only is Rashford renowned for his work against child hunger, but he is also an accomplished writer. It seems the Ted Lasso writers decided to pay tribute to him by including his book in the episode.

Richmond’s points

At this stage in the series, Richmond has accrued 39 points from eight games, which may not be a lot, but it is enough to keep the team in contention. Moreover, this score would be quite respectable in real life, as the team would have a solid chance to tie for 8th place against Fulham Football Club this season. It appears that Richmond is performing better than expected and is safe from relegation this year.

Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 9 will arrive on Apple TV + on 10 May 2023.
