In a tribute to an iconic LGBTQ+ film, the writers have crafted a compelling storyline.

Following two triumphant seasons of perfectly-timed comedy and engrossing storytelling, fans were taken aback to find that the third season of Ted Lasso didn't quite live up to the quality of its predecessors.

Episodes had doubled in length, resulting in a perceived decrease in engagement. However, the essence of Ted Lasso remains, ensuring the continuation of brilliant character development and expertly shot football scenes.

Thanks to the recently aired ninth episode, the overarching narrative of season three is finally back on track, with Colin Hughes playing a pivotal role.

In the initial two seasons, Colin was a relatively minor character, portrayed as just another player on AFC Richmond's team. However, the extended run time of the episodes in this season has been a boon to his narrative arc. Earlier this season, he came out as gay to his team, seemingly jeopardising his friendship with Isaac McAdoo.

Fans feared Isaac would sever his friendship with Colin upon discovering his sexuality. However, in keeping with the series' ethos, this apprehension proved largely unfounded. The title of the ninth episode, La Locker Room Aux Folles, subtly suggested that the pair would reconcile.

Clearly, the episode's title is a nod to Andrew Lloyd Webber's renowned musical, La Cage Aux Folles. This was not only one of the first Broadway productions to centre around a gay couple, but it also inspired the cult classic film The Birdcage, starring Nathan Lane and Robin Williams.

The creative team behind Ted Lasso made a commendable decision to name an episode after this pivotal LGBTQ+ representation milestone. It served as both a fitting tribute and a statement that Colin and Isaac's friendship could thrive irrespective of their sexual orientation.

Fans had apparently never suspected Isaac of homophobia, as his resentment towards Colin was rationally explained.

‘Dead certain Isaac potential issue(s) with Colin’s secret was not that he was in the closet but that he seemingly didn’t trust his friend to react well to it,’ a fan concluded.

Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 10 will arrive on Apple TV + on 17 May 2023.
