Fans are unhappy with the direction Survivor is taking.

For over two decades, CBS' Survivor has been one of the most popular reality competition shows on television, largely owing to its deserted island atmosphere and abundance of unscripted sequences.

Cut off from modern civilization and the influence of producers and host Jeff Probst, contestants had to think on their feet and come up with their own strategies to survive and win the competition. However, this season seems to have strayed from that tried and true formula and moved into more scripted territory.

While Season 44 comes across as better produced than previous instalments, fans feel the show is moving away from what once made it such a hit. The current season feels more scripted and, thus, a bit boring, with few real surprises in the last ten episodes.

Just as the discovery of a hidden immunity idol seemed to inject excitement and unpredictability, Jeff Probst went ahead and made a highly controversial announcement that many feel may very well have ruined the whole twist.

Audiences anticipated the contestant who found the idol to use it wisely toward the end of the season, but Probst had other plans. He immediately announced that the idol had to be used by the end of the episode, or its power would expire. Fans were shocked by this turn of events and accused Probst and the producers of resorting to cheap tactics to artificially boost excitement for just one episode, while totally failing to see the big picture.

Instead of a slow burn lasting until the end of the season, viewers were left with a rushed, subpar episode designed to make the show feel alive in the moment and make people forget about how it’s been slowly dying over the course of Season 44. With this approach, where everything is hurried and scripted, fans struggle to envision how the show can ever return to its roots as a showcase of unpredictable and, most importantly, unscripted human ingenuity and wit.

As one fan aptly put it, 'Production is starting to railroad the show by introducing artificial means to ensure that something interesting happens in every episode because attention spans are...'

Survivor Season 44 Episode 11 will arrive on CBS on 10 May 2023.
