Spider-Punk is tuning up fast: Across the Spider-Verse star Daniel Kaluuya revealed at the Red Sea International Film Festival that he and co-writer Ajon Singh are nearly done with the first draft of the animated spin-off, months after it was first announced.

Spider-Punk isn’t just a cool detour anymore — Daniel Kaluuya says the solo animated spin-off is real and actually moving. He just gave a status update, and yes, it sounds like there’s a script taking shape instead of just a vibe.

Where things stand

Speaking with Deadline at the Red Sea International Film Festival, Kaluuya said he and co-writer Ajon Singh are in the finishing stages of the first draft for a standalone Spider-Punk movie. It’s a Sony project that builds on his breakout take on Hobie Brown in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse — and this comes months after word first got out that a spin-off was in the works.

As for who else from the Spider-Verse might show up, Kaluuya’s answer was basically, "TBD." Translation: they’re not ready to say, or it’s not locked yet.

One thing that is locked: Kaluuya confirmed Spider-Punk will be back in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which Sony currently has dated for June 18, 2027. Long wait, but at least there’s a target.

The creative headspace

Kaluuya said the audience response to Hobie helped push the spin-off forward, and he sounds pretty energized about writing in this corner of the universe. He also shouted out producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller for backing the project and dropped a note he got from Lord that’s basically the mission statement:

"Films aren’t about people, they’re about relationships."

Kaluuya added that Lord and Miller chase a kind of joy in animation and storytelling — which he admits is harder to pull off than it looks — and that’s the vibe he’s aiming for here.

The industry talk

Kaluuya also waded into the current wave of studio and tech consolidation, reacting to the Warner Bros. Discovery–Netflix deal as a byproduct of how fast the tech side is reshaping the business. In his words, tech companies now own the infrastructure. But he’s not letting the shuffle drive his choices. He wants to make films for theaters and keep chasing that communal moviegoing hit, not spiral about the market.

Or, as he put it: he isn’t prescribing to the anxiety; he wants to communicate, say things, and keep reaching for cinema and the shared experience.
