Fans have officially given up on the show.

There's nothing more frustrating than watching your favorite show descend into a complete train wreck. To the surprise of many, that was exactly what happened to the universally acclaimed melodrama When Calls the Heart earlier this month. The cherished central romance between Elizabeth and Lucas was derailed at the conclusion of Season 10 in a shocking and rather contrived plot twist. The protagonist declined to follow the man she purportedly loved to Capitol City, choosing to remain in Hope Valley instead.

Fans were quick to accuse the writers of ruining Elizabeth as a character, transforming her from a strong and supportive woman to a needy and self-centered snowflake. The situation deteriorated further when the writers immediately started pairing Elizabeth with Nathan, leaving even the most ardent fans of that coupling feeling let down.

Massive Disappointment

The point is fans had anticipated seeing Lucas and Elizabeth get married for three full seasons. The way their romance got brushed aside with such carelessness didn't sit well with them. Furthermore, the prospect of Elizabeth dating Mountie Nathan in the upcoming Season 11 upset fans even more, and not for the reason that might come to mind first.

While many people still support Lucas and hate the idea of seeing Elizabeth with someone else, the real reason the proposed new pairing comes across as so lame is the way the writers have gone about executing it in the script: lazy doesn't even begin to describe it.

Same Old Mistakes

The writers are merely rehashing the same narrative by pairing Elizabeth with a Mountie again. It's a blow-by-blow repeat of what they did at the very beginning of the series when Elizabeth was dating the late soldier, Jack.

Instead of replaying the same storyline, the writers could have gone ahead with the concept of Elizabeth and Lucas being together. The direction they went, though, viewers will be bored out of their skulls if they keep watching the show and all they get is a variation on the same old story.

There is still a chance for redemption in the new season, but the writers will have to make a genuine effort to make sure that Nathan and Elizabeth don't feel like a rehashing of Jack and Elizabeth.

Who should Elizabeth choose as her life partner?
