Peacock drops all ten episodes of The Paper season 2 on 9 September, and a lot of the coverage will tell you the Office spinoff has abandoned weekly releases. It never had them. The show has been a full-season dump since two weeks before it launched — and that is the least strange thing about how it has been sold.

Here is the thing almost every write-up this week will get wrong. In July 2025, Peacock announced The Paper would arrive on a staggered schedule: four episodes on 4 September, then two a week through a 25 September finale. On 21 August 2025 — a fortnight before launch — it scrapped that and put the whole season out at once.

So not a single episode of this show has ever been released weekly. Season 2 dropping all ten on 9 September is continuity, not a change of heart.

Which is a small thing, except that it is the pattern. Almost everything anybody claims to know about how The Paper is performing turns out, on inspection, to be something else.

The vote of confidence was cast when the viewership was, by definition, zero

Peacock renewed The Paper for a second season on 3 September 2025 — one day before season 1 premiered. That renewal is now the single most-cited piece of evidence that the show is a hit. It is also the one piece of evidence that could not possibly have been based on anyone watching it.

A year and a day later, here is what the company has published about how many people did:

  • NBCUniversal's season 2 press release, 14 August 2026: no viewership figure, no superlative, not even an executive quote.
  • Peacock's own blog: nothing.
  • Nielsen's current streaming Top 10 (week of 3–9 August 2026): the show does not appear on the Overall, Originals, Acquired or Movies charts.

Season 1 was also repurposed onto NBC on 10 November 2025, three episodes in a row. No ratings for those airings have been published either. So there are two currencies here — broadcast ratings and streaming minutes — and the public has neither.

A newsroom comedy whose own numbers are unverifiable

The premise of The Paper is a local newspaper trying to prove it still matters to a countable public. The show itself is made by a company that will not say how many people watch it, on a service that publishes nothing, and is graded instead by aggregate scores built on very thin foundations.

  • Rotten Tomatoes, season 1: 85% from 108 critics; audience 70% from "500+" ratings.
  • Rotten Tomatoes, season 2: 82% from 11 critics as of 8 September. On that review count it will move within days — and it did move, within an hour, between the series page and the season page.
  • Metacritic, season 1: 66 from 39 critics. The user score is 6.8 — from four ratings.

One hundred and eight critics filed on season 1. Four members of the public rated it on Metacritic. The Toledo Truth Teller has a circulation problem; so, arguably, does the programme about it.

What season 2 actually is

Ten episodes, released together on 9 September. NBCUniversal's logline: after the staff sweep the Ohio Journalism Awards, publisher Ned Sampson chases a story about an exclusive local private club that puts the paper at risk, while navigating his attraction to reporter Mare Pritti.

Which produces a joke the production presumably did not intend. Season 2 opens with the fictional newsroom collecting trophies — Ned's first line in the trailer is "May I present to you the award-winning staff of the Toledo Truth Teller" — while the real show appears to have gone through the 2026 Emmys without a nomination. It hands its characters the ceremony its makers didn't get.

Cast: Domhnall Gleeson (Ned), Sabrina Impacciatore (Esmeralda Grand), Chelsea Frei (Mare), Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, Tim Key, Eric Rahill, Allan Havey — and Oscar Nuñez, still the only actor carried over from The Office. Guest turns this season from Jon Lovitz, Andy Richter and Lisa Gilroy.

Created and run by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, with Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, Howard Klein and Ben Silverman among the executive producers. Universal Television. The paper is owned by a parent company called Enervate, which also makes a toilet-paper brand called Softees — a detail that does most of the show's thematic work on its own.

Daniels on why a newsroom: "You want a subject that you believe a real documentary would see as promising. If I saw a documentary about this subject, I would watch it because I think there's drama in it and there are people you can root for."

The Michael Scott question, answered

Nothing has been announced. Steve Carell appears nowhere in the 14 August press release, nowhere in Peacock's season 2 blog post, nowhere in the trailer. The only connective tissue Peacock actually markets is the conceit that this is the same documentary crew that filmed Dunder Mifflin, plus Oscar Nuñez.

The rumour recirculates every few months. It has never been confirmed by anyone at Peacock, and it is not confirmed now.

The binge-native show that television then rationed out

The last oddity. Peacock decided in August 2025 that The Paper should not be doled out weekly. Ten weeks later NBC put the same season on broadcast in three-episode blocks — reintroducing exactly the appointment-viewing drip the streamer had just rejected, on the network where The Office ran weekly for nine years.

Same episodes, same company, opposite theories of how comedy reaches people, ten weeks apart. Nobody has published how either version did.

Still unknown

  • Any audience figure for season 1 — minutes, viewers, completion rate, anything.
  • The NBC broadcast ratings from 10 November 2025.
  • Why Peacock abandoned the staggered plan two weeks before launch. No rationale was ever given.
  • Whether there is a season 3. No renewal has been announced.
  • Whether any Office character beyond Oscar Martinez turns up.

One practical warning if you go looking: several evergreen "everything we know" pages at otherwise reputable outlets still say no premiere date has been announced and stop at "production began January 2026." They were written before August and never updated. The date is 9 September.
