Sorry, Jedi Fans: Mark Hamill Won’t Cameo in Star Wars: Starfighter
Mark Hamill is hanging up the lightsaber for good, backing Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars: Starfighter while confirming his own saga is over — so don’t expect a Luke cameo.
Mark Hamill just passed the lightsaber. He says he’s done with Star Wars, he’s fully on board with Ryan Gosling leading the next movie, and no, he’s not angling for a cameo. Honestly, it’s kind of refreshing.
Hamill gives his blessing, then bows out
At the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, Hamill was asked if he had any advice for Ryan Gosling, who’s headlining the newly announced Star Wars: Starfighter. His take: they don’t need his notes. He’s a longtime Gosling fan, and says he became an outright super fan after that SNL sketch where Gosling played Beavis. Translation: he’s excited, he’s supportive, and he’s not hovering.
"I just don’t see any reason to. Let me put it that way: I mean, they have so many stories to tell, they don’t need Luke anymore. I had my time, and that’s good. But that’s enough."
That lines up with what he’s been saying lately: after more than 40 years as Luke Skywalker, he’s satisfied with what he’s done and ready to let the next generation take it from here.
Where we last saw Luke
If you’re tracking the timeline, Hamill’s Skywalker popped up most recently in The Book of Boba Fett in 2022, following his sequel trilogy return in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker. Given his comments, don’t bet on a de-aged Luke swooping in for one more lesson.
What Star Wars: Starfighter actually is
- Lead: Ryan Gosling
- Director: Shawn Levy
- Timeline: set after the Battle of Exegol, post–Episode 9
- Positioning: not a prequel and not a sequel to an existing character’s arc — it’s a new corner of the era
- Release date: May 28, 2027
- Hamill’s involvement: none — he says they don’t need his advice, and he’s not looking to return
Levy has been clear this isn’t about backfilling old mythology or dragging legacy characters out for another bow. It’s a clean launch in a familiar timeframe. And with Hamill happily cheering from the sidelines instead of lurking in the wings, it sounds like Starfighter really is meant to stand on its own.
