Sorry Greendale Fans: Joel McHale Confirms Community Movie Delay
It looks like the long wait will continue for the foreseeable future.
NBC's Community was one of the most beloved sitcoms of its time, making millions of viewers fall in love with Joel McHale and the rest of the show's vibrant cast.
Considering that the series' popularity has only grown since its untimely cancellation in 2015, it was a pretty smart decision on Peacock's part to produce a movie sequel to please old fans and attract new ones.
Sadly, it looks like the nearly decade-long wait to see the Greendale crew again will continue for the time being. According to McHale, production on the movie was supposed to start this month, with all the necessary steps being taken to ensure that the sequel would be ready in no time — and then the WGA strike began, throwing all of Hollywood into turmoil.
Just like many blockbuster films and primetime TV series that have been postponed due to the strike, the Community movie is going to suffer too, unable to go into production without the writers on board.
'That was a bummer, because we were getting very close [to filming]. But at the same time, I'm a thousand billion percent behind the writers. The writers need to be paid,' McHale said.
Even though the movie is postponed, McHale himself is fully behind the strike. The actor makes it clear that not getting his paycheck in the near future is no big deal for him, as the WGA is fighting for a good cause and needs time to ensure their demands are addressed by the industry.
While that's certainly noble on McHale's part, fans themselves are a bit disappointed, saying that the WGA strike will make the upcoming fall a barren land in terms of interesting TV, as none of the primetime shows will be able to finish filming in time.
The good thing is that the Community movie is not canceled and will start shooting as soon as the strike is over. In addition to McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Donald Glover, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong are all set to reprise their roles for the upcoming Peacock film.
