See Kim Kardashian's 3 Most Controversial Met Gala Looks (Marilyn Gown Excluded)
The most famous Kardashian has been known to cause a stir with each of her Met Gala appearances.
Although the Met Gala celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, the fundraiser only truly became the premier fashion event about a decade ago. That's when a multitude of supermodels, influencers, and actors began dressing extravagantly for the occasion, donning outrageously expensive outfits that shocked the public and commanded attention.
Among all these influencers, Kim Kardashian stands out as both the most contentious and most appreciated. Each of her appearances at the Met Gala has left an indelible mark, not always in a positive way.
Here are Kim Kardashian's three most controversial Met Gala looks:
Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy (2013)
Kim's first Met Gala appearance was memorable for all the wrong reasons. As Kanye's plus-one at the time, she shocked the public with her tacky floral dress, which many fans likened to a grandmother's couch. She was pregnant with North and didn’t know anyone at the event, and her insecurity was evident in her red carpet-photos. But hey, the first time doesn't count!
Thierry Mugler (2019)
The legendary fashion designer came out of retirement to create a dress for the reality star, envisioning her as a nymph emerging from the water. This signature 'wet look' became a trademark for Kim, as fans were stunned to see the influencer in such a revealing and slightly campy outfit.
However, considering the 2019 Met Gala was all about camp, she fit right in, even if some people really hated the ensemble and pilloried it all over social media.
Balenciaga (2021)
Kim's post-divorce appearance at the Met Gala proved even more divisive than her previous looks. Her all-black dress, complete with what appeared to be a napkin draped over her face, presented her as a sort of black widow, making the audience uncomfortable as they watched her walk down the red carpet.
Nevertheless, Kim undoubtedly managed to make a statement, while keeping up the revenge dress tradition late Lady Di started all those years ago.
The 2023 Met Gala begins at 6:30 p.m. EST and can be streamed on Vogue's official website.
