Scott Caan Reveals Why Ten Years of Hawaii Five-0 was the Best (And Worst) Time of His Life
The actor seems to regret staying on the show for far too long.
CBS' reboot of the iconic 1960s series Hawaii Five-0 became one of the reasons why reboots are so popular today, as show creator Peter M. Lenkov managed to create a real hit by updating the trite formula of the original and turning it into a real blockbuster on the small screen. Hawaii Five-0 has been on the air for a full decade, bringing the network great ratings season after season and cementing itself as one of the most popular police procedurals of the past decade.
But what does one of the show's stars, Scott Caan, really think about spending so much time playing the same role on the same show?
When Caan joined Hawaii Five-0, he was going through a challenging phase in his career: he was trying to establish himself as Hollywood's next leading man, but after appearing in several box office flops in a row, things weren’t exactly going his way.
The role of Detective Sergeant Danny Williams, in which he has appeared since the first episode, has allowed Caan to reinvigorate his career. Being the face of a widely popular show helped him maintain relevance over an extended period. Nonetheless, it appears the actor laments spending so much of his acting prowess on a single character.
‘It was ups and downs. Looking back, it was a great time. I got to live in Hawaii, one of my daughters was raised there. There was a lot of positives, but there was a lot of negatives too. As an actor, if you do the same thing for ten years, it’s like everybody seen everything you got… It’s hard not to become a shtick,’ Caan said.
Despite earning a considerable net worth of $18 million from the show, Caan seems somewhat disappointed with his decision to invest such a substantial part of his career in one series rather than exploring a more diverse range of projects. Currently, Caan is starring in Fox's Alert: Missing Persons Unit, signalling that he continues to view television as his preferred career platform.
