Sarah Hyland Hosts Love Island and Things Get Real Awkward Real Fast
The show is struggling because of the new host.
When it was announced that Arielle Vandenberg will be replaced as a host of CBS' Love Island by Sarah Hyland, the whole fandom of the popular reality show was in a disarray. People loved Arielle for her genuine care about the contestants and her feel-good vibes, and some of the fans were quite sure that Modern Family's actress will fail to live up to that high standard.
Now that the fifth season of Love Island premiered, it turned out that people were completely right, as Sarah Hyland already caused a few problems for the show.
Recently, contestant Mike Stark called out the new host for being disrespectful to other cast members. Stark said he didn't like Hyland's tone when she announced that Keenan Anunay had gotten the fewest votes and was ordered to leave the Fiji villa.
A lot of viewers agree with that take, adding that Hyland is not only disrespectful and rude, but also a generally bad host. People say she fails to generate any kind of atmosphere for the show, and even the series' great writing staff and lovable contestants can't rescue the situation.
'I'm not gonna lie, I absolutely hated the fact that they got rid of Arielle Vandenberg for a rebrand. Arielle was so genuine and I felt as if she truly cared about the islanders,' a fan wrote on Reddit. 'With Sarah, it feels like she's putting on a facade for the cameras… She says one-liners that just don't land, and it feels awkward.'
However, others thought that Stark's complaints about Hyland's behavior were a bit strange, as the islander began to argue with the host after she asked Keenan's girlfriend, Vickala 'Kay Kay' Gray, if she was comfortable leaving the project just to support her man. A lot of fans actually supported the host over her concern, noting that they might've been wrong about her all the way.
'I never really liked [Hyland] until Keenan's dumping. The moment she asked Kay Kay if she was 100% happy with her decision made me respect her so much more and proves how much she cares… I hope Kay Kay finds the strength [to leave him] soon,' one fan said.
