With Henry Cavill set to bow out of The Witcher at the end of season 3, fans have been speculating as to how his exit will play out.

That was, of course, once they’d vented their frustration at the headline star and titular character was leaving the show.

And it may just be that the ideal finale for Geralt of Rivia has been staring us in the face all along – he’ll give up being a witcher.

From before he was even born Geralt was intrinsically linked to Ciri who was his destiny.

Indeed, ultimately his entire purpose is to protect the princess, doing everything in his power to defeat her many pursuers to stop her Elder Blood and powerful magic from being used maliciously. To that end, he will do anything to take care of Ciri.

So, how about a final scene in which Geralt, urged on by others calling out "Witcher!" as they desperately try to keep him from renouncing his position, replies with cries of "No! No more!" as he tells them that he simply can’t do it anymore?

Does it really sound that crazy? After all, showrunner Lauren Hissrich told Entertainment Weekly, after it was announced that Cavill was to leave the show,

"Geralt’s big turn is about giving up neutrality and doing anything that he has to do to get to Ciri," a plot twist she described as "the most heroic send-off…even though it wasn’t written to be that."

She went on to say that "Geralt has a new mission in mind when we come back to him… he’s slightly different," a comment she then caveated with "by the way, that’s an understatement."

Based on the book series of the same name by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, Hissrich also said that the upcoming season of the show is the one most closely aligned to the novel – in this case Time of Contempt which is the fifth book in the series and was first released in English in 2013.

So, any fans of The Witcher who simply can’t wait to find out what season 3 has in store for Henry Cavill’s character could just read the book.

Although, there’s no guarantee that the TV writers will stick authentically to the novel. So, it’s probably best to also enjoy one more season of action-packed adventure featuring the star of Superman.
