Outlander Season 7 Should Stop Selling Us Bree & Roger - They Just Don't Work

Starz's Outlander, initially marketed as a high-budget, time-travel fantasy series, has won the hearts of many not because of its CGI or impressive historical battle reenactments but largely due to the central love story between Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser. Diana Gabaldon's exceptional writing made a huge contribution to the couple's appeal, but the undeniable chemistry between Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan truly transformed these star-crossed lovers into a global sensation.

However, after more than six seasons, fans started growing weary of Jamie and Claire. At this point, the writers attempted to address this by shifting the focus onto another couple - Jamie and Claire's daughter Bree and her husband, Roger.

The idea of delving into Claire's daughter's personal life initially intrigued fans, but they soon realised that while Bree and Roger were fascinating characters individually, they didn't quite work as a believable couple. Fans have observed a distinct lack of chemistry between Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin since their characters became lovers, and the fact that the current season features many more scenes of them together hasn't improved matters.

This season has already included more intimate scenes between Roger and Bree than ever before, but fans remain unconvinced by the couple, admitting to skipping their sex scenes due to the cringe factor and the actors' lack of chemistry.

'It was about 30 seconds too long in my opinion. I watched their sexy talk and the first bit of the lovemaking, thinking it would transition but then it kept going and going so I skipped the rest,' a fan noted.

However, some fans disagree with the widespread disdain for Roger and Bree, arguing that the current season has successfully developed them as a couple, improving their chemistry and allowing them to evolve into a believable pair, making their sex scenes more emotional and engaging.

'And I think we as the watchers needed some redemption for trash scenes before with those two. I genuinely thought their chemistry was believable last night and that it was well done,' another fan argued.

Still the general consensus is that Roger and Bree simply don't work as a couple.

Outlander Season 7 Episode 8 will premiere on Starz on 4 August 2023.
