As HBO readies its new Harry Potter series with a fresh cast, one of the original trio finally answers whether he’ll return to the Wizarding World — especially after Tom Felton slipped back into Draco Malfoy on Broadway.

HBO is building a brand-new Harry Potter series from the ground up, which means a fresh cast and a long-form take on the books. Naturally, the big question keeps popping up: are any of the original film stars coming back? Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint — fans would take any of them. With Tom Felton recently slipping back into Draco Malfoy mode on Broadway, the speculation machine kicked into a higher gear. Now Grint is weighing in himself.

So, would Rupert Grint return as Ron?

Short answer: not right now. In a new BBC chat, Grint sounded open in theory but not exactly eager to dive back in tomorrow.

"Maybe in the future. Never say never, but for now, I think, as much as I loved it, I'm enjoying stepping outside of that world."

He also gets that Ron is going to stick to him no matter what — and he's genuinely okay with it. As he put it, he doesn't think he'll ever fully step out of Ron's shadow, and he's fine with that.

The new trio, and why it hits different for Grint

This reboot marks almost 25 years since the first film hit theaters, and HBO has already picked its fresh-faced leads: Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron. When Stout was announced, it sent Grint straight back to his own early days on set; he was 11 when he first got the part and says he remembers every second of that whirlwind.

Where the family fits in

Despite his hesitation to return right now, Grint isn't anti-Potter in the house. He'd be fine if his kids wanted in on the Wizarding World someday, and his five-year-old daughter, Wednesday, has already watched some carefully chosen, not-too-scary clips from the films.

What's actually confirmed about the reboot

  • HBO's new Harry Potter series is aiming to premiere in 2027.
  • Season 2 is already in early development, which tells you they're thinking long game.
  • So far, only one franchise alum is officially confirmed to return — and no, it's not Grint.
  • Tom Felton recently revisited Draco Malfoy on Broadway, which helped reignite all these return rumors.

Bottom line: Grint isn't closing the door forever, but he's enjoying life outside the Burrow for now. And with a new cast stepping in and the show already planning ahead, the franchise is clearly moving forward — whether or not the old guard pops back in later for a wave. Honestly, fair enough.
