One The Boys Joke Made Even Seasoned Fans Shrivel of Second Hand Embarrassment
A scene in the last season managed to disappoint fans quite a bit.
Amazon Prime's The Boys is certainly one of the most unhinged shows around. With its cast of antiheroes and villains routinely killing dozens of people and so much blood, nudity, and crude humor in every episode, The Boys even beats The Idol in terms of disturbing content — even though viewers still love the show for what it is.
But despite The Boys' popularity with both critics and fans, sometimes the writers miss the mark and create a completely unfunny and questionable joke that immediately falls flat on its face.
One such joke came in last year's third season when the creators decided to tease the audience a bit by showing a food festival with titles like 'BLM BLTs,' 'Woke Wok,' and 'LGBTurkey Legs.' Obviously, the writers didn't mean to offend anyone, but fans were disappointed by how on-the-nose and trite these jokes were.
While most viewers struggled with second-hand embarrassment while watching this scene, others approached it from a different perspective, noting that The Boys' writers were actually making fun of corporations, not BLM or woke people.
'The people who try and claim this stuff is "the show making fun of the left" are so dense it's unreal. They are poking fun at cynical capitalist attempts to milk social causes for profit,' one fan argued on Reddit.
Although this theory is one hundred percent correct, people couldn't help but cringe at the fact that it was The Boys that made such an allegory, given that Amazon Prime is a pretty questionable company in many ways.
'It's so funny that Amazon (of all organizations, really) produces a show in which the caricature of greedy, self-serving corporations gets mercilessly mocked and belittled, and is generally a bumbling idiotic abomination,' a Redditor pointed out.
However, some people didn't really care about this scene at all, and the only funny thing about it was the amount of time and money The Boys' creative team spent on these signs.
'The best part is that all of these set pieces are sitting in a storage bin somewhere in a warehouse and have been designed specifically for this one scene,' another fan said.
