It looks like Nina Dobrev failed to live up to the hype after her tenure on the hit series ended.

When The Vampire Diaries was on the air, names like Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder were on everyone's lips, as these two young stars really showed a lot of promise despite the subpar writing they were given. However, when the show ended in 2017, Dobrev simply disappeared from view while still continuing to work on television and in Hollywood.

Why exactly did this happen?

It looks like Dobrev simply failed to live up to the high expectations for her post-Vampire Diaries career, picking her projects poorly and failing to make an impression in them.

One of the first lead roles she landed after leaving the show was 2018's Dog Days, a feel-good comedy that also starred Eva Longoria, Vanessa Hudgens, and lots of dogs. Unfortunately, the movie didn't even make back its budget, proving to Hollywood producers that Dobrev's success on the popular series didn't translate to box office numbers.

Her next film, Then Came You, was an even bigger bust, and even the idea of seeing Dobrev as a flight attendant failed to entice audiences to see the movie. The film grossed less than a million dollars, making 2018 the year that Dobrev completely ruined her career. Fans are absolutely sure that if she'd chosen her projects carefully and only agreed to star in big Hollywood productions, her future could have been completely different.

Elena Didn't Really Love Stefan, And This Vampire Diaries Scene Proves It

Last year's Redeeming Love could make Dobrev a star again, as the actress chose to play a supporting role and embody a rather dark character in this period film. However, the story of a young girl coming of age in the 1850s failed to impress audiences, bombing at the box office and receiving no support from viewers or critics.

While fans are quite sad that Dobrev managed to practically destroy her career in such a short span of time, many put some of that blame on the actress' agent who failed to see that all of the movies she starred in after The Vampire Diaries looked like total flops from the start.

But fortunately, Dobrev still has many supporters who hope she'll be able to create a renaissance for herself in the coming years.
