New to K-Dramas? Here's Why You Shouldn't Watch Boys Over Flowers
The popular show is a bad place to start.
With K-pop currently outselling all other genres in the world and making millions of people fall in love with Korean culture in general, it's only natural that more and more people are interested in learning more about the Korean people. And what better way to do that than through K-dramas?
However, the world of K-dramas is extremely large and confusing, and newcomers will have a hard time finding the perfect show to start their obsession with. That said, one show is often cited as the best gateway to K-drama, and that's actually a big mistake.
A dated show
The show in question is Boys Over Flowers, a one-season romantic drama that follows the life of a young working-class girl who enrolls in a prestigious school and finds herself involved in the affairs of a bunch of rich boys. Yes, this premise sounds quite intriguing, but be warned, starting your journey into K-drama with this show is not a good idea at all.
The thing is, Boys Over Flowers was filmed more than a decade ago, and it certainly shows - the series looks cheap and cheesy, and even though the actors really try to act, they are unable to reach the same level of professionalism that the actors in the newer series are known for.
Toxic characters
Also, the 2009 series may seem a little strange to modern viewers because of the way some of the romances are portrayed. Instead of caring and supporting each other, Boys Over Flowers characters often emotionally torture and abuse each other, which may have looked kinky back in the day, but now looks quite strange and appalling.
Even though a lot of people watched Boys Over Flowers as their first K-drama, they keep praising it just for the nostalgia factor, not for the quality. Don't waste your time watching this show and look in the direction of some of the newer projects in the genre!
