Netflix's Warrior Nun May Be Down, But Its Fandom Stands Defiant
While the future of the series is bleak, its fandom steps forward.
Netflix's Warrior Nun was an incredibly fascinating journey into the world of powerful Warrior Sisters protecting the world from demons.
But despite the fantasy series' high ratings, the streaming service canceled Warrior Nun in December 2022 — and fans of the show were totally outraged by the decision.
With each passing month, Warrior Nun's chances of renewal are dwindling, but the hope is not going away. Given the widespread support of the show's creators and, most importantly, its fandom, we can still expect the adaptation of the Warrior Nun Areala comic to be renewed for a third season at some point in the future.
In the first months following the series' cancellation, fans started a petition online to prompt Netflix to resume the show, gathering more than 120,000 signatures as of June 2023. The petition creators note that Warrior Nun is one of the few examples of fantasy action series that include representation of LGBTQ+ and PoC characters, which is why they claim it must be continued.
'No matter how good our numbers are for these shows, no matter how much love we show for these shows, it will never be enough. It will always feel targeted, especially after they barely promote them, hold blooper reels hostage, and do no cast interviews,' the petition description reads.
Since its cancellation, Warrior Nun has been widely discussed in the media and continued to win industry awards. Showrunner Simon Barry has repeatedly thanked fans for their support and expressed his desire to transfer the rights to the series to another production company.
Although the situation hasn't improved yet, the fandom's support for the show only keeps growing, with the #SaveWarriorNun hashtag racking up over 13 million tweets. Fans held their first online gathering, called OCS Conclave, on June 3 and have released a number of interviews with cast and crew, including the series' writer David Hayter, who all support the fandom in their struggle to get the show renewed.
Actress Olivia Delcán, who played the shy sister Camila, also joined the cause, pointing out that Warrior Nun may only be renewed thanks to the efforts of the fans.
'If something happens in Warrior Nun, if there's gonna be a third season, it’s gonna be because of you, guys,' the actress shared.
For now, we're all hoping that another service acquires the rights to the series, or that Netflix comes to its senses in time. But no matter what happens, the show will never die as long as it has such loyal and devoted fans.
