Netflix's One Piece Showrunner Plans to Ruin - Er, Adapt - Another Anime?
The creator has set his sights on another beloved anime.
When Netflix announced its plans to adapt the iconic Japanese manga One Piece into a live-action show, fans of the original were quite upset, fearing that the streaming giant would ruin Eiichiro Oda's creation, as they believed it had done with Cowboy Bebop. However, the critics were proven wrong when the show premiered earlier last month. The creative team behind One Piece not only managed to preserve the original anime and manga's adventurous spirit but also added some new and exciting ideas to the mix.
Nonetheless, some One Piece purists were still disappointed with the Netflix version, accusing it of rushing the original storyline and feeling like a cheap anime rip-off.
New Beginning
This minor backlash against his creation didn’t stop One Piece showrunner Steven Maeda from enjoying his success. The show has held the number one spot in Netflix's ratings since its debut more than a month ago.
Furthermore, it appears that Maeda is planning to build a true anime empire at Netflix, as he recently expressed his desire to adapt another iconic manga as a live-action streaming show.
This time, Maeda has his sights set on Spy x Family, a series that follows a seemingly normal family where each member is actually a dangerous spy. The manga and its anime adaptation have become a huge hit in recent years, so it's easy to see why Maeda would be interested in adapting it.
'I love Spy Family so much. It’s just wonderful. It’s funny you mentioned that one. I’ve been chasing Spy Family for a while,' Maeda said.
Can It Really Happen?
Given the popularity of One Piece, it's only a matter of time before Maeda is given the go-ahead to adapt more anime into live-action, and Spy x Family seems like the most logical next step in this new chapter of streaming history. That is, of course, unless the original manga's creator, Tatsuya Endo, objects.
