Paramount+'s gritty crime saga MobLand stacks the deck for season 2, tapping Johnny Flynn and Ophelia Lovibond as cameras roll.

Quick one for the crime-drama crowd: MobLand season 2 has been shooting in London for a few weeks now, and it just added two new regulars who should ring some bells.

New faces for season 2

Deadline says Johnny Flynn and Ophelia Lovibond have signed on as series regulars. Flynn is about to be a lot more visible thanks to his next big gig: he is playing Lucius Malfoy in the new Harry Potter TV series. Lovibond has been great on Minx, so this is a nice pickup for MobLand.

Where season 1 left us (and why this show works)

If you missed the first run, the setup is classic Guy Ritchie-adjacent London underworld warfare: the Harrigans versus the Stevensons, two crime dynasties tearing into each other while a fixer tries to keep the wheels on. That fixer is Harry Da Souza (Tom Hardy), a street-smart problem solver who is as charming as he is lethal. Pierce Brosnan runs the Harrigan side as Conrad, while Helen Mirren steals scenes as Maeve Harrigan, the family’s steel-spined matriarch.

The show wears its moral compass on its sleeve: 'family above everything'.

And yes, MobLand was a legit hit for Paramount+, which explains why the renewal came fast. Fun bit of behind-the-scenes trivia: the series started life as a Ray Donovan spinoff called The Donovans before getting reworked into its own standalone thing. That lineage is why the fixer angle feels so baked-in. Guy Ritchie executive produces and directed the first two episodes.

Who is who

  • New series regulars: Johnny Flynn; Ophelia Lovibond
  • Lead players: Tom Hardy as Harry Da Souza; Pierce Brosnan as Conrad Harrigan; Helen Mirren as Maeve Harrigan
  • Season 1 ensemble: Paddy Considine; Joanne Froggatt; Lara Pulver; Anson Boon; Mandeep Dhillon; Jasmine Jobson; Emmett Scanlan; Teddie Allen
  • Returning in season 2: Janet McTeer as Kat McAllister (a top-tier international crime boss); Toby Jones as Colin Tattersall (a retired detective obsessed with taking down the Harrigans); Alex Fine as Donnie (Kat’s enforcer and a persistent problem for Harry)

Quick take

Our review of season 1 landed pretty squarely in the 'this isn’t reinventing the wheel, but the wheel spins nicely' camp. The fixer-first structure (you can feel the Ray Donovan DNA) and the stacked cast led by Hardy, Brosnan, and Mirren give the show more juice than most gangster dramas.

With production already underway in London and two sharp new additions in Flynn and Lovibond, season 2 looks like more of the same in the best way. You in?
