Martin Scorsese is heading to a galaxy far, far away, joining Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu — the big-screen continuation of the Disney+ hit — landing in U.S. theaters this May, with details of his role now emerging.

Well, this is one I did not have on my Star Wars bingo card: Martin Scorsese is in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Yes, that Martin Scorsese.

The new feature, from Lucasfilm and director Jon Favreau, continues the story from the Disney+ series and hits U.S. theaters on May 22, 2026, with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures handling distribution. The studio is leaning into the theatrical push too — as one promo put it: 'only in theaters and IMAX May 22.'

Who Scorsese plays, and how we know

A fresh trailer confirms Scorsese is lending his voice to an Ardennian shopkeep who has info on the Hutts. If that species name rings a bell, you’ve seen it before in the franchise. The official Star Wars account even sealed the deal with a cheeky caption that read: 'absolute cinema.'

The cast, so far

  • Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin
  • Sigourney Weaver plays a character named Ward
  • Jeremy Allen White voices Rotta the Hutt, Jabba’s son
  • Martin Scorsese voices an Ardennian shopkeep with Hutt intel

The fun wrinkle

There’s some delightful industry whiplash here. Scorsese has spent years publicly wrestling with the cultural footprint of superhero and mega-franchise filmmaking, and now he’s popping up in a Star Wars movie. Also worth noting: he and Favreau go back to The Wolf of Wall Street, where Favreau acted in Scorsese’s 2013 Oscar-nominated film. That prior collaboration suddenly pays off in a galaxy far, far away.

Context for the legend joining the galaxy

Scorsese’s filmography needs no introduction, but here’s the lightning round to appreciate the juxtaposition: Mean Streets (1973), Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), The King of Comedy (1982), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), Goodfellas (1990), Casino (1995), The Aviator (2004), The Irishman (2019), Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). Now add Star Wars voice actor to that list.

The Mandalorian and Grogu opens in U.S. theaters on May 22, 2026. If you need a refresher before then, all three seasons of The Mandalorian are streaming on Disney+.
