Lack of Sex Scenes in Outlander Season 7 is a Sad Attempt at Realism Nobody Asked For
It looks like fans shouldn't expect more steamy scenes this season.
While Starz's Outlander became a huge hit for the network because of its intricate storylines, well-written time travel twists, and stunning vistas of mist-covered Scottish hills, fans also fell in love with the show for another reason — a huge amount of beautiful sex scenes that were always a staple of the show.
Following the action and seeing huge battles unfold before them always delighted viewers, but nothing pleased them as much as seeing Jamie and Claire tearing each other's clothes off in yet another surprising location.
However, the last couple of seasons have proven that Claire and Jamie are getting a bit old, and even though actors Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe look as fresh as they did almost a decade ago, their characters have been together for more than 30 years in Season 7. It appears that the lack of interesting sex scenes in the current season was done by the writers for the sake of realism.
'What really is evolving is these two characters and this marriage. You know, we're talking 30 years later. It would be highly, I think, unreal and unrealistic if they still had the same kind of first passion that they had. This is something that's grown over time, it has deepened, it has evolved. They are no less passionate, but it's just in a different form,' Caitríona Balfe said.
Although fans appreciate the Outlander crew's attempts to make their show more realistic, no one was actually asking for that kind of realism. As a result, some viewers feel cheated watching the seventh chapter of the show, as compelling sex scenes between Jamie and Claire were a big reason why many people tuned in to Outlander in the first place.
In addition, the scene in the last episode where Claire tries to have sex with Jamie, only to stop abruptly, really broke fans' hearts. For many, the idea that the lead characters can no longer share that kind of intimacy calls their whole love into question.
Of course, it's natural for sexual passion to fade over time, but people really want to see it stay the same, at least in a TV show.
Outlander Season 7 Episode 4 will arrive on Starz on July 7, 2023.
