The revival show ended with a major twist.

Admittedly, Justified: City Primeval fell far short of meeting the expectations of the fans of the original show, as Timothy Olyphant's Raylan Givens was virtually sidelined throughout the revival series. That left a bitter taste in the mouths of fans. Nonetheless, the show pleasantly surprised the fandom, with the biggest shock being Boyd Holbrook's stellar performance as Clement Mansell, the series' primary villain. Despite Holbrook's excellent acting, viewers still wanted to see another Boyd return to the show.

It would appear that the show's creators were acutely aware of the fans' earnest desire to see Walton Goggins' iconic Boyd Crowder, the main antagonist of the original series. Thus, they orchestrated a massive twist in the final episode of City Primeval.

The Return Of The Villain

In the last episode of the revival, Clement Mansell was finally killed, and Raylan fulfilled his promise to his daughter by retiring from the U.S. Marshals to spend more time with her. However, the beloved hero's tranquil future was abruptly cut short when fans were finally shown what Boyd Crowder was up to.

Just like in the final episode of the original series, Boyd was depicted in prison, but this time, he evidently had a plan to regain his freedom. By seducing a correctional officer and faking a terminal illness, Boyd managed to escape prison, leaving the door open for him and Raylan to return in a future season.

Working On A Tight Schedule

Unsurprisingly, fans were thrilled to see Goggins reprise his role as Boyd, and it seems the producers went the extra mile to facilitate this return. According to series creator Dave Andron, they had a mere 36 hours to film these final scenes, as Goggins was already engaged in another project and didn't have much time to devote to City Primeval.

Fortunately, the actor was just as eager to return as the fans were to see him, sacrificing his free time to film the final twist scenes. That indicates that he is more than willing to reprise his most iconic role.
