Jared Leto’s transformation into Skeletor in the new Masters of the Universe trailer has the internet in a frenzy, as fans unite in their reactions to the striking new look of He-Man’s legendary nemesis.

So, the first trailer for Amazon MGM's Masters of the Universe finally dropped, and if you think He-Man fans were going to talk about anything but Skeletor, well, you clearly haven’t met He-Man fans. Turns out, the big reveal wasn’t just that Skeletor looks shockingly close to his comic book version—it’s that Skeletor is, in fact, played by Jared Leto. And the internet, predictably, has a LOT of feelings about that.

Skeletor Looks the Part… But Wait, It’s Leto?

First, credit where it’s due: Leto-in-Skeletor-form is pretty much as dead-on to the source material as you could hope. Fans, in their uppercase meme glory, threw out stuff like "Jared Leto’s Skeletor looks so comic book accurate" and "GOD DAMN THEY COOKED," which, in trailer-speak, means people are seriously into this version of the villain. The character’s skull face, glowing eyes, and purple hood? All exactly what the collective nostalgia brain wanted.

But then you get to the name: Jared Leto. At which point, the internet’s mood swings hard from excitement to suspicion, and honestly, I can’t blame them. The reactions are about as subtle as a B-movie supervillain:

'Pros – bro looks AWESOME. Cons – Jared Leto.'

Another person managed to sum up the vibe:

'Not bad. But… Jared Leto.'

If you’ve been keeping score, this isn’t the first time Leto’s been the controversial pick for a blockbuster villain. His Joker in Suicide Squad landed with a thud, and Morbius... well, that’s a meme that keeps on giving (and not in a good way).

The Skepticism Goes Deeper

The deeper cuts are downright pointed. Someone out there referred to him as 'the franchise killer,' referencing his knack for joining big, nostalgia-heavy projects that go off the rails. Seriously, there's Tron: Ares coming up, so keep your popcorn handy for that one. There was also this gem:

'Not having to see his face is a huge win.'

Which, frankly, I get—if you’re not wild about Leto’s acting, Skeletor’s skull mask at least spares you from his signature stare.

Meanwhile, Over in Eternia…

If you care about more than just Skeletor (questionable, but possible), here’s the setup: Nicholas Galitzine is playing Prince Adam, starting out his movie life not as a musclebound hero but as a guy schlepping it in an Earth HR office, because why not. Then destiny calls, he grabs the sword, and gets shipped off to save a ruined Eternia where Skeletor (Leto, skull and all) is running the place.

Camila Mendes is your Teela (expect plenty of side-eye), and Idris Elba is in as Duncan, aka Man-At-Arms. Director Travis Knight, who did Bumblebee and Kubo and the Two Strings, is at the wheel, so there’s a shot this actually works.

Release Date, Cast, and the Mattel Connection

  • Release: June 5, 2026, in US theaters (mark your calendar/dread accordingly)
  • Cast: Nicholas Galitzine (Prince Adam), Jared Leto (Skeletor), Camila Mendes (Teela), Idris Elba (Duncan/Man-At-Arms)
  • Produced by: Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Studios (aka the people who just gave us Barbie)
  • Director: Travis Knight

There you go—the new live-action Masters of the Universe somehow looks exactly like what fans pictured, but also stars the most divisive actor working today. The Skeletor design might be perfect. The internet’s trust in Leto? Still waiting for an upgrade.
