This is not what fans expected Brett Goldstein and Phil Dunster to sound like.

Ted Lasso became one of the most popular comedies of 2020, the year of the lockdown and global pandemic when the whole world desperately needed something to feel good about. In addition to providing comfort to its fans, the Apple TV+ series also launched many actors into real fame.

Among them, Brett Goldstein, who plays the team's captain Roy Kent, and Phil Duster, portraying striker Jamie Tartt, were the most popular discoveries.

By the third season, people have grown to love Goldstein and Duster's characters so much, they can get seriously upset when the actors deviate from their on-screen personas. When a red carpet interview with Brett and Phil was released recently, fans were shocked to find out that the actors don't actually sound like their characters do on Ted Lasso.

While Phil Duster's voice doesn't differ too much from the way Jamie sounds in the show, Brett Goldstein sounds much softer and more caring than Roy. It seems that, in Ted Lasso, Goldstein tries to sound more masculine to better fit the character he plays, while in real life, he prefers to speak much more calmly.

'Oh my, I cannot cope with their voices,' one fan exclaimed.

In fact, this wasn't the first time Brett Goldstein's voice became the subject of controversy. Back in Season 2, viewers were surprised to find that his character began to sound quite different. In the first season, Roy Kent's voice was much more similar to Brett's, but the actor decided to adopt a cheap macho voice in the second season, which really bothered fans at the time.

'Roy Kent's voice drastically changed from Season 1 and I found it annoying and distracting. He sounds like he's doing a Christian Bale Batman impression,' another fan noted.

Perhaps Goldstein shouldn't have changed his voice in the first place so as not to upset the fandom. As for Phil Duster, it's really unclear why Jamie Tartt sounds somewhat different from the actor himself — but like in the case of Goldstein's Roy, this is probably an artistic decision that reflects how Duster perceives his character.

Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 12 will arrive on Apple TV+ on May 31, 2023.
