Fresh off 2024’s Road House, Jake Gyllenhaal is lacing up for Play by Play, an Amazon MGM Studios sports drama from a Marvel writer, as a Road House sequel moves forward with him set to return.

Jake Gyllenhaal is sticking with the sweat-and-adrenaline lane. Fresh off busting heads in Road House for Amazon, he is suiting up for another project at Amazon MGM Studios: a new sports movie called Play by Play.

What is Play by Play?

The logline is under wraps, but here is what is locked in: Chris McCoy wrote the script. If that name rings a bell, he did rewrites on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and has written for Disney, Fox, DreamWorks, Paramount, and Laika. Gyllenhaal is producing under his Nine Stories banner. Joining him on the producing roster are Josh McLaughlin, plus Religion of Sports duo Tom Brady and Gotham Chopra. No release date yet.

Amazon and Gyllenhaal keep the streak going

This keeps Gyllenhaal in business with the same studio that released Road House on Prime Video in 2024. A sequel is already in development with Gyllenhaal returning as Elwood Dalton. One change: Doug Liman is not coming back; Ilya Naishuller is stepping in to direct.

Where to see Gyllenhaal next

  • The Bride! opens in United States theaters this weekend. It is directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal and stars Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, with Jake in the mix.
  • Honeymoon with Harry, a dramedy at Prime Video, pairs him with Kevin Costner.
  • Code Black, a political thriller based on a short story by Harrison Query, is in development.

Meanwhile, about that writer

On top of Play by Play, Chris McCoy just sold a spec to Paramount called Hit the Gas. It is being produced by Neal Moritz (who shepherded Sonic the Hedgehog) and is described as:

"propulsive thriller"

So, yes: a secretive sports movie with a notably athletic producing lineup, a busy star, and a writer revving another project at a different studio. More when someone finally says what game Play by Play is actually playing.
