The Wrecking Crew isn’t done swinging—director Ángel Manuel Soto is teasing a sequel that throws Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa back into the fray.

The Wrecking Crew landed on Prime Video last month and actually stuck the landing — a buddy-cop brawler with enough attitude to earn a second round. And yes, the director already has sequel ammo. Spoilers ahead for The Wrecking Crew.

Where a sequel could go

The film ends with Jonny (Jason Momoa) holding a slip of paper — the name of the man who murdered his mother — and choosing to torch it. Director Angel Manuel Soto says the moment is not the dead end it looks like; in his mind, Jonny clocked the name before he lit the match. Translation: the revenge fuse is still burning.

"There are several things that seem interesting to me [for a sequel]. That's one of them. If there's a killer on the loose, are they really going to let it go? I think there's a good beginning for the second one there. And the other thing that seems interesting to me is that the yakuza that they kill, Nakamura (Miyavi), he's not the boss, he's someone's son. It seems to me that there's material there for a sequel."

  • Sequel hooks: Jonny likely memorized the killer's name before burning the paper; the yakuza target Nakamura (played by Miyavi) was a protected heir, not the top dog.

Quick refresher: what the movie is

Set in Hawaii, The Wrecking Crew pairs up estranged half-brothers Jonny (Momoa) and James (Dave Bautista) after their father's suspicious death. Digging for answers dredges up old secrets and shaky loyalties, and the deeper they go, the messier the family conspiracy gets — with plenty of wrecking in their path.

Angel Manuel Soto (Blue Beetle) directs from a script by Jonathan Tropper, whose credits include Star Wars: Starfighter. Beyond Momoa and Bautista, the cast stacks up with Claes Bang, Temuera Morrison, Jacob Batalon, Frankie Adams, Miyavi, plus Stephen Root and Morena Baccarin. The movie hit Prime Video last month and was met with a warm response, which never hurts when you are whispering about a follow-up.

What Bautista and Momoa are doing next

Bautista is in the middle of filming the Highlander reboot with Chad Stahelski, taking on the Kurgan. That shoot was supposed to roll last fall, but it pushed after Henry Cavill got injured during training. On the other side, Momoa is suiting up as Lobo in the DCU — a role he has chased for years — and yes, you can spot a quick Lobo tease in last month's Supergirl preview. Aquaman or not, he was always going to get there.

If Prime Video wants a sequel and schedules line up, the pieces are practically arranged on the board already. Do we want more Bautista-Momoa chaos? Obviously.
